DOGWOOD CITY GROTTO
Join me on a beginner friendly vertical trip with two short drops and an abundance of formations to admire. You must be trained and competent with Single Rope Techniques (SRT) as this is not a training session but rather a trip for people who have already learned and are ready to take their skills to the next level. You will need your vertical setup which I will be inspecting beforehand, a helmet, a headlamp that attaches to your helmet, extra batteries, knee pads, gloves, sturdy shoes, a bag with water, snacks, and an extra layer in case you get cold, and a change of clothes for after the cave. I would also recommend bringing a trash bag or container for your dirty clothes when we exit and return to the vehicles.
We will meet at Andy and Miki Kalber's Property in Cookeville, Tennessee at 10 am eastern time and caravan/carpool to the parking area. If you plan to attend, you must sign the permit which will be emailed to you when you sign up for this event. Please reach out to Joel Rowe with any questions you have - jkrowe530@gmail.com.
Per the NSS website:
"Located in Cookeville, Tennessee, is Secret Cave a small and well decorated cave. The cave must be accessed by way of a 34 foot rappel into its main room, but at the bottom the passages become almost entirely covered in exceptional displays of flowstone-covered walls, draperies and rimstone. Descending a second 60′ pit, leads the visitor to another small, formation filled room. The cave was surveyed to a total length of 967 feet and a vertical extent of 139 feet.
Purchased from NSS members Albert and Ethel Ogden, the unspoiled nature of the cave is a wonderful reflection of their desire to preserve Secret Cave and ensure its conservation. Albert and Ethel sold the cave to the NSS in hopes that others would understand and appreciate the cave’s beauty while ensuring perpetual access and protection. Visitors to the Albert and Ethel Ogden Preserve are welcome to explore what some people describe as the most beautiful cave in the State of Tennessee."
